What is the reproductive strategy used by pandas?

Pandas are slow reproducers- they reach ual maturity at 6 years of age and only have a cub every one or two years. At most, a female panda may have 7 cubs. What reproductive strategy does the panda seem to be utilizing? Why might this be advantageous for the panda?
